Disabling AutoPlay/AutoRun

Autoplay and Autorun are two different features. When you put a CD/DVD disk into your disk drive or when you plug any removable storage device into your USB, Firewire or e-Sata ports two different activities happen in Windows. Autorun scans the inserted device and if it finds a file named 'autorun.inf' in the root directory it executes the commands specified in this file. Autoplay begins to read the inserted device and asks the user how to interpret the data in the device by asking what to do with it. To disable these features, simply follow these steps:

 1. Click on the Start button and type 'gpedit.msc' into the Search box
 2. In the left pane under Computer Configuration, go to 'Administrative
    Templates->Windows Components->Autoplay Policies'
 3. In the right pane double-click on 'Turn off Autoplay'
 4. Select 'Enabled' then click 'OK'
 5. Double-click on 'Set the default behavior for AutoRun'
 6. Select 'Enabled' then then 'OK'
 7. Restart your computer for the changes to Take effect
